However, in our experience, if you say something like, "Hey, Google, play river sounds for two hours," it doesn't play one of the built-in ambient sounds. Instead, it locates and plays a two-hour river soundtrack or playlist from Spotify or Google Play Music, depending on which you have set as your default. I can say “hey google play white noise” and it does the right thing. I thought it would be cool to instead have something silent to trigger this like a NFC tag or a button. If you’ve got Google Home speakers dotted around the house, you’ve got a few choices when it comes to playing white noise or ambient sounds.
Each of the ambient noise sounds built into the Google Home brain lasts for an hour. Once that hour is over, it’ll repeat again unless you ask for something else or ask for it to stop. You can also ask for something specific if you prefer, as in, “Okay Google, play...” followed by your request.

We know that asking an AI to read your child a bedtime story is a bit like something from Black Mirror, but your kids might well enjoy it. If you need help focusing or falling to sleep, a path to peaceful slumber awaits. That said, when you request any of the in-built ambient sounds, they will play for one hour, if you do not manually stop them sooner. If you want to get specific, you can ask Google to play audio ranging from a crackling fireplace to the sound of a running river. I’m a fan of the basic “rain” option, which sounds authentic enough to convince you that the weather outside has taken a turn. When requesting to hear a fan, Google plays what must be a heavy oscillating fan; I don’t think there’s any way to mimic my cheap desk fan from Target, but this also works.
I haven’t been able to figure out a pre-built way to do this yet either, and its the last missing part to the bedtime routine we do. And while I could play white noise sounds for an hour, my wife really wants it all night like it does when requested via voice. All Google Home and Google Nest speakers have Chromecast-like functionality, of course, so you can send any ambient sound or white noise track you like over to the speaker using your phone.

But if you don’t like the selection that’s been made for you, say, “Hey Siri, play the next one,” and the HomePod will jump to the next track in the random ambient noise queue. At the moment, the choices seem to be fireplace, ocean, forest, rain, night, stream, and white noise. All you need to do is ask Google to “Help me relax” or “Play ambient noise” to get started (only supported with U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia language options). If you'd like a little more control over which peaceful sounds will be lulling you to sleep, you can also pick from one of fifteen specific recordings, outlined below. If you ask for something not on this list, such as coffee shop sounds or city sounds, it will try to locate and play the request using your default music streaming service. These will not automatically turn off after one hour, but will stop playing after the track or playlist has finished.
